Starting in 2021 with a Sustainability Award and a photovoltaic system in Amstetten

‘Sustainability’ is one of the biggest buzzwords of our time. However, it can be far more than just a buzzword, as two inspirational initiatives from the Umdasch Group and its subsidiary Doka demonstrate. The first is an award honouring new climate-friendly ideas within the company, in which all employees were invited to participate. The other is a huge photovoltaic system installed on the roofs of the company’s production site in Amstetten, which will contribute to a green energy mix in future.

Kuwait’s first in-situ cantilever bridge project

The Nawaseeb Road in Kuwait forms an important part of the country's national infrastructure, providing a strategic, logistical corridor to neighbouring Saudi Arabia. In delivering a solution for the highway bridge section, Doka has helped provide Kuwait with a landmark achievement; its first, in-situ cantilever bridge. As a full-service provider, Doka supplied an all-in-one solution, which included 3D planning, Cantilever Forming Travellers (CFT), and formwork instructors' support to ensure a smooth, fast and cost-effective process.

Making an impression with fair-faced concrete

The new headquarters of Banca Transilvania, situated in Cluj-Napoca, Romania, is an office building, which covers an area of more than 40,000 m2 and a ground area of 6,000 m2. It is a landmark and a special project for Doka Romania and KÉSZ Construction Romania, in terms of the execution of structures with fair-faced concrete requirements on this magnitude.

BIM in the spotlight

One of Northern Europe's tallest office buildings is rising into the sky in the Gårda district in Gothenburg. The 144 metre high building will provide 42,000 square metres of office space over its 36 storeys. This project is unique for Doka in various reasons: it's not just that the BIM experts planned a building entirely in 3D for the first time; two digital services from Doka – Concremote and DokaXact – are making their valuable contribution to construction progress.

Dismantling the “Deutsche Welle”

One of Cologne’s landmarks will be gone by 2021: originally, the towers of the former “Deutsche Welle” studio were to be blasted into the ground. However, for various reasons, the plan was changed: the 138 m high towers would be dismantled from top to bottom. Work began in mid-May 2019. In order to ensure that the dismantling could progress in an orderly, and – most importantly – safe way, the contractor called on Doka’s expertise. The Doka specialists planned and assembled the protective screen enclosure and trained the team from BST Becker Sanierungstechnik GmbH to use the automatic climbing technology.

US 181 Harbor Bridge – America’s longest cable-stayed bridge

Traffic in the USA has increased by 38.4% in the last 25 years, and along with it the importance of measures to create and maintain safe, efficient transport links. The city of Corpus Christi in Texas is rising to this challenge with the new US 181 Harbor Bridge, which will have a considerably higher capacity than the structure it is replacing. Doka’s formwork expertise was called in to help build the 164 metre high pylons and over 100 piers.

Tunnelling for science

The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN is the biggest particle accelerator in the world – and growing: to equip the LHC for new, more ambitious experiments in the next decade, the accelerator is currently being upgraded. Doka developed three different formwork carriages and numerous special formworks to help build the tunnel system required for the upgrade.

Paperless construction site thanks to digital twin

A replacement structure for a hydropower plant is being created in Flums SG – completely paper-free. In doing so, the client, planner and builder are relying entirely on BIM. Doka is also on board. The formwork experts are producing the formwork plans entirely in 3D. The data are exported to the overall model for the work preparation and used for ordering materials and execution. On the construction site, the 3D formwork model ensures more efficient workflows.

Katara Towers

Timed to be ready for the 2022 FIFA World Cup, a new luxury hotel complex is emerging on Qatar’s coast: Katara Towers. In addition to hotel rooms, the towers, which are just over 200 m high, will also contain apartments, offices, leisure facilities and restaurants. For erecting the core walls in the towers, climbing formwork systems from Doka were used.
